He also won the Gold medal in the 50m. freestyle (tied with fellow American Gary Hall, Jr.--the first time this has happened). The Baltimore Jewish Times reports him as Jewish. Update: Ervins father of mixed African-American and Native American descent. His mother is Jewish. He is the first swimmer of African-American descent to be on the American team. A UC Berkeley student, he came out of "nowhere" to make the team and his results speak for themselves. As he puts it, he checks a lot of boxes on the forms that ask about his ethnic heritage. He was a participant in JCC Maccabi events. (Jewish sports events for those unfamiliar with the term).
