Update: Ervins father of mixed African-American and Native American descent. His mother is Jewish. He is the first swimmer of African-American descent to be on the American team. A UC Berkeley student, he came out of "nowhere" to make the team and his results speak for themselves. As he puts it, he checks a lot of boxes on the forms that ask about his ethnic heritage. He was a participant in JCC Maccabi events. (Jewish sports events for those unfamiliar with the term).

Dara Torres

Dara Torres - Despite her un-Jewish sounding name, Ms. Torres is listed as Jewish in an excellent source. An American, she is the winner of four medals in team 4x10 relays or medlay events (1984, Gold; Silver and Bronze in 88; Gold in 1992). She went on to a career as a fashion model and as the host of "Tae Bao" infomericals. She decided to make a comeback at 32, and is considered a pretty sure bet to be on the 2000 team. She wants to swim individual events this time. Correction: Her father is Jewish; but she identifies as a Christian.
