Won gold medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter speed skating events at the 32 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y. This was the one Olympics where these races were run en masse, so the outcome was viewed as something of an aberration. Nonetheless, Jaffe was a New York City guy beating the worlds best at a sport typically dominated by Scandanavians.
