Participated in 3 Olympics. Won a silver medal in 1948 in team combined exercises, one gold (floor exercises), one silver (team combined exercises) & two bronze (team exercise with portable apparatus, asymetrical bars) in 1952; and, four gold(asymetrical bars, floor exercises, balance beam, team exercise), and two silver (individual combined exercises, team combined exercises) in 1956. A total of five gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Won the individual and team parallel bars competition for Germany in the first modern Olympics in 1896. Decorated army veteran. Deported to a concentration camp at age 73 and died of starvation. Because he was a gold medal winner, he was spared deportation to a camp that specialized in the immediate execution of its inmates.
