Jacques Malinak - Born in Warsaw, Poland in the late 19thC, he served as a physician in the Russian army during WWI. He settled in New York. He convinced NYC to set up the first plastic surgery department in a public hospital. Later, he was a founder of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and was instumental in establishing the field as a board recognized speciality.
Jakob Rosenthal - Austrian Jewish physician who spent time in Dachau and fled to China w/ other refugees in 1938. From 1941 to 1949 he served with Maos army. He became chief medical officer and the only foreign general. He immigrated to Israel in 1949 and died in 1952. A statute to his memory has been erected in China and his grave is a pilgrimage place for visiting Chinese delegations.
Janus Korczak - Also known as Henyrk Goldszmidt. Korczak, a Polish Jewish physician, founded a famous Jewish orphanage in Warsaw in 1911. He wrote many books on child rearing, which advocated methods which are the norm today. He and the orphanage were forced to re-locate to the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940. Despite offers to secure his personal escape, Korcak stayed with the children and accompanied them to Auschwitz. He is often cited as an example of the best in both human and medical ethical behavior.
Jay Levy - National leader in the field of HIV/AIDS research. One of the three "discoverers" of HIV. Hes a UC-San Franscisco physician. Levy has had his champions that he was "the" discoverer of the AIDS virus. But this controversy has faded and Levy is principally known today as one of the top researchers/educators in the field.
(1914-95) Born in New York City, Salk was the developer of the first successful polio vaccine (1955). The vaccine was intentionally not patented. Neither he nor Sabin received the Nobel. Salk founded the Salk Institute in San Diego which carries on his work in viral disease research. His brother, Lee Salk, was a well-known child psychologist who frequently appeared on television.

Working for the US Public Health Service, Goldberger discovered that pellagra, a disease that killed thousands, especially in the South, was caused by a diet deficiency. His discovery caused controversy- impinging on sensitive issues of class and race. But shortly after his death, other researchers found he was right. "B" vitamins were added to bread and pellagra ended.

The most important reformer in the history of American medicine. In the early 1900s, he spent two years examining over 150 institutions for the training of physicians and didnt like what he saw. Around 1910, He issued the "Flexner Report" which indicted medical education as poorly supervised, poorly taught, without a standard curriculum, etc. As a result of his work, medical education throughout the USA was completely revised, leading to the modern medical school as we know it. He also convinced Dept. Store magnate Louis Bamberger to provide the endowment for the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton (later the home of Albert Einstein).
