The most important reformer in the history of American medicine. In the early 1900s, he spent two years examining over 150 institutions for the training of physicians and didnt like what he saw. Around 1910, He issued the "Flexner Report" which indicted medical education as poorly supervised, poorly taught, without a standard curriculum, etc. As a result of his work, medical education throughout the USA was completely revised, leading to the modern medical school as we know it. He also convinced Dept. Store magnate Louis Bamberger to provide the endowment for the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton (later the home of Albert Einstein).
