    American classical pianist who was born in NYC in 1925. He has had a distinguished solo career as well as frequently appearing with Issac Stern in a trio (Stern-Istomin-Rose).

    Born in Hungary in 1899, his original family name was "Blau". He was a child prodigy on the violin and came to the US in 1920. He assumed the conducting mantle of the Philadelphia Orchestra in the late 1930s and created the "full" sound the orchestra was famous for. Died in 1985.

A child prodigy, he composed five symphonies and numerous other works--including the overture to "A Midsummers Nights Dream"--which includes the "Wedding March" that everyone is familiar with.

Copland was born in Brooklyn of Lithuanian Jewish descent, the last of five children, on November 14, 1900. He was a 20th Century composer who brought American-based themes into his work (i.e. Appalachin Spring). The family name was Kaplan. It was changed, so far as Copland knew, by the Ellis Island agent.

He is also Music Director of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Chief Conductor of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra.

Alan Shulman

Shulman was a Jewish American composer and cello virtuoso. He wrote a considerable amount of symphonic music, chamber music, and jazz music. Some of his more well known works include his 1940 Neo-Classical Theme and Variations for Viola and Piano and his A Laurentian Overture, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1952 under the baton of Guido Cantelli.
