Sol Bloom - (1870-49) The son of Polish immigrants, learned Hebrew from his mother but was otherwise self-educated. Very poor, he worked as a factory worker & managed the amusements at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. He moved to NY in 1903, & became a leading builder (incl. the famous Apollo & Music Box theaters). In 1923 was elected to the first of 14 consecutive terms representing the Upper West Side of Manhattan.(Eventually heading the House Foreign Affairs Committee.) He supported relaxation of immigration laws, labor rights, & was a vigorous supporter of Israel. He died in office.

Update: A reliable source tells us that he is related to the Gabor sisters and that his wife became a Mormon(!). Lantos is "still" Jewish.
