  • Lewis Charles Levin

This is a strange tale. Levin, who was born in South Carolina, was one of the founders of the American or "Know Nothing Party". This party, which was anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant, gained a lot of popularity in the 1840s and early 1850s. There were then so few Jews in America that Jews were not an issue. Levin served as a Pennsylvania represenative from 1845 to 1851. Levins party died when the issue of slavery overwhelmed "nativist" issues.
