Frederick Kohner

Frederick Kohner (25 September 1905, Teplitz-Schönau, Austria-Hungary [now Teplice, Czech Republic] - 7 July 1986, Los Angeles, California, USA) Czechoslovakian screenwriter came to Hollywood following the rise of Nazi Germany. He is known for his escapist films that include the first three "Gidget" films (the bubbly surfer-girl "Gidget" is based on his own daughter.) Before emigrating to the U.S., Kohner studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and attended the University of Vienna where he wrote and later published his doctoral dissertation Film is Art. During the 1920s, he worked as a film correspondent in Hollywood. Later he returned to Europe for a few years to write for a pair of newspapers. The success of his Gidget character spawned a television series, books and several TV movies. Kohner also wrote other books including Seven Rooms in Hollywood. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
