Saturday, Aug 09, 2008, 03:43pm
Guy Starek was born on May 3, 1965, in Jerusalem. Starek, whose father was also a marksman, started shooting at the age of 12 and says it was a natural choice for him “since there were always weapons in the house.” He started out with Hapoel Jerusalem and now shoots for Hapoel Ma'abarot.
He made his international debut in 1984, and only four years later set a world record in the men's 50-meter free rifle prone competition. Starek placed seventh in the 50-meter free rifle prone event at the 1995 World Championships and fourth at the 1998 World Championships. He also won the 50-meter free rifle at the 1997 World Cup in Milan.

Saturday, Aug 09, 2008, 03:23pm
Vered Buskila was born. May 23, 1983, in Bat-Yam, Israel.
Buskila is part of the highly promising Israeli 470 model women's sailing team along with Nika Kornitzky. Vered learned her sailing chops in Hapoel Bat-Yam and was soon recognized as a major talent. Her partnership with Kornitzky was an arranged marriage of sorts, hatched by the Hapoel sports organization. They emerged as the premier duo in Israel with a string of spectacular results for such a young team. In 2001, the team sailed in Ireland at the European Championships and took third place thus pulling of a major upset. In 2002 the twosome finished tenth in a credible performance and they created a major international buzz due to their relative youth. In the 2003 World Championship they went one better by achieving a ninth place finish.
